In our recent post about marketing trends in 2022, we talked about video. Specifically, how you have got to include videos such as Reels and TikToks in your marketing!

If you’ve never dipped a toe into the world of video creation, we know that this is a bit daunting. But don’t worry – here are 5 of our top tips for creating great video content for social media.

Tip 1: nail the basics

One of the first things you need to do is make sure that you’ve got the basics down. Don’t worry, it’s very easy! Here are a couple of things that you need to do:

  • Shoot all of your videos vertically – this is essential for Reels and TikToks! All of them are displayed vertically. While horizontal videos can be displayed, they won’t be formatted correctly and will look a bit strange
  • Add audio or music – a big part of TikToks in particular is the addition of audio or music. How to know what audio to use? Head to our next tip!
  • Add hashtags – like other social media posts, you will need to add a brief caption and hashtags! These will help people find your content.
  • Add subtitles – subtitles are essential for a couple of reasons. Firstly, many people watch videos on Facebook and Reels on Instagram with their sound off. Including captions will allow you to still capture their attention. Secondly, this will make your videos more accessible to deaf people. Here’s a great post explaining how to do this.

Tip 2: hop on trends

Once you’ve mastered the basics, you need to get some ideas for your video content! One of the best ways to do this is to follow industry leaders who create great Reels and TikToks. What topics do they cover? What do their videos look like? It’ll take a couple of tries to create your unique video style and voice, so this is a great place to find inspiration.

However, don’t stop there! Inspiration can also come from people outside of your industry. Listen out for particularly popular songs or audio clips (e.g. dialogue from viral videos or movies) that you think could be relevant to your business. Funny, industry-specific twists on popular audio clips are always a hit.

Tip 3: don’t worry about aesthetics

You may worry that your industry isn’t ‘pretty’ enough for video. But that’s not a problem! With a lot of video marketing, personality is a lot more important than aesthetics.

For example, Duolingo is one of the most popular brand accounts on TikTok – and the majority of their videos are simply filmed in the Duolingo offices. They’re not necessarily pretty, but they are full of personality.

Tip 4: being on camera helps

If you’re comfortable with speaking and being on camera, we definitely recommend that you get your phone out and start filming! Having your face on camera will immediately add personality to your videos and will make people more likely to watch your videos.

However, this isn’t to say that you have to show your face on camera. You could film your work space, an outdoor space, or even create graphics with an app like Canva. Pair this with a personalised voiceover, and your video can still be full of personality.

Tip 5: don’t forget your analytics

Finally, we recommend taking video marketing just as seriously as any other marketing you do. Look into your analytics – how many plays did each video get? How did your Reels perform in comparison to your other posts?

Having a good look at these analytics will let you know what videos perform particularly well. This is very useful, because you can go on to create more videos in that vein. If a video is particularly popular, you could even make it a weekly series! What’s most important though is that you use your analytics as a guide – keep getting creative, because you never know what’s going to be your next big hit.
